The Memphis City Sound Chorus thrives because of the energy and style of the people who have stepped up to lead. Here are a few of the people that make our ensemble tick:

Nan Stahl - DirectorOur Director, Nan Stahl, has been a Sweet Adeline since 1984 (that's 26 years). She attended her first River City Sound Chorus rehearsal a few months after arriving in Memphis, and was hooked on barbershop instantly. It wasn't too long before she was asked to sing baritone in a quartet. In 1986, that  quartet, Blue Ribbon Edition, placed first at Regional competition. A devoted member of the chorus, she took on many chorus responsibilities including baritone section leader, show chairman, and eventually assistant director. In 1994, Nan took the chorus to her first of seven regional competitions as director. In 2001, she decided to commute to Little Rock, Arkansas to sing with Top of the Rock Chorus of Sweet Adelines. Two years (and MANY miles) later, she returned to the Memphis City Sound Chorus, and as of this past May, is "back in the saddle again" as the "new" director of the chorus.

Nan has three children, Stephanie, Stacy, and Kevin. She is also "Nanga" to a feisty 7 year old, red headed granddaughter named Juliana and a sweet grandson named Brenden who is 2 years old.

In "real life", Nan is a registered nurse at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, working in the Operating Room and the Recovery Room. She claims she has to work to support her Sweet Adeline hobby.

Enrica Ramey - Associate Director

Our assistant director, Enrica Ramey, has been a music educator for many years, both on college campuses and in the realm of private piano instructor. She owned and operated the first school of music in Memphis to use a group piano lab, which she later incorporated into her teaching at the University of Memphis. She participates in many productions around the city using her voice, piano skills, and directing ability. Enrica has a Masters Degree in music from the famous Julliard School of Music in New York City. Even though her degree is in classical piano, when she is directing or singing with our chorus you can see that she has fallen in love with the barbershop harmony style. She obtained the status of certified director in 2004.
